Fatigue

Fatigue is a feeling of extreme tiredness, lethargy, weakness, or lack of energy. It can be either physical or mental. Fatigue affects most people from time to time due to lack of sleep, working long hours, strenuous exercise, or illnesses.

Physical fatigue manifests as muscle weakness or exhaustion. It can make even simple physical tasks seem impossible. Mental fatigue is characterized by lack of motivation, daytime sleepiness, moodiness, or difficulty concentrating or focusing.

Some common causes of fatigue include:

  • Lack of sleep - Not getting enough good quality sleep is one of the most common causes of fatigue. Most adults need 7 to 8 hours of sleep per night. Getting less can lead to fatigue.
  • Anemia - Low levels of hemoglobin and red blood cells (anemia) can reduce oxygen delivery to tissues, resulting in constant tiredness and weakness. Anemia has many causes, including iron deficiency.
  • Stress - High stress levels raise blood cortisol, contributing to fatigue. Dealing with demanding challenges tires out both the mind and body.
  • Poor diet - Inadequate healthy foods can fail to provide sufficient energy to "fuel" the body and brain optimally. Vitamin or mineral deficiencies also promote tiredness.
  • Underlying medical conditions - Fatigue is a symptom of many illnesses like cancer, heart disease, diabetes, thyroid dysfunction, and multiple sclerosis. It's wise to consult a doctor to identify and treat any underlying issue.
  • Lack of exercise - Although counterintuitive, too little exercise can significantly lessen energy levels. Any movement helps combat exhaustion. Start small - even 10-minute daily walks help.

Some protective lifestyle measures against fatigue include:

  • Following consistent sleep schedules
  • Avoiding alcohol and nicotine
  • Managing stress - yoga, meditation, vacations
  • Eating nutritious foods
  • Treating infections promptly
  • Spending dedicated media-free time to unwind daily

Fatigue acts as a vital "check engine" light - alerting one to needed self-care. Paying attention to reduce fatigue boosts motivation, productivity, and joy in daily activities. A little rest and self-love go a long way!
